We are disappointed to announce that Disney will be pausing the use of a virtual queue for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios beginning September 23, 2021.
This attraction has utilized an incredibly simple and convenient virtual queue system since the attraction opened in Walt Disney World in December 2019.
The virtual queue allows guests with a valid theme park reservation for Disney’s Hollywood Stuios that day to log on before even entering the park. If a guest with a reservation was unable to get a virtual queue slot at 7 a.m. there was a second chance to try at 1 p.m. each day.
This allowed guests to skip the taditional stand-by queue which would be tremendously long and enjoy everything Hollywood Studios had to offer or even hang out at their resort or enjoy their day in another way prior to their boarding group being called.
The virtual queue was simple, easy-to-use, easy-to-understand and allowed for more flexibility in a park day instead of waiting hours in a queue line for one attraction.
Well, as of September 23 it will no longer be in use so if you are wanting to ride that attraction and not pay above and beyond Lightening Lane for this tier 1 attraction, plan on spending a large chunk of your day standing in this line.
We try to stay positive when discussing changes in Disney but for this, there’s no upside. You either waste a large portion of your day or you spend an additional fee on top of Lightening Lane to ride.
When Disney announced Disney Genie+, they glossed over this little tid bit about Lightening Lane that we will highlight here:
There will be a “select set of attractions separate from those available using the Disney Genie+ service” that will be available for purchase through Disney Genie+. These passes will be an additional cost even with the cost of Genie+ and will allow guests Lightening Lane access to those select attractions.Disney
Interestingly enough Disney tried to spin this on Disney Parks Blog that this would allow guests MORE flexibility. That’s a stretch guys. Here’s what they had to say regardin flexibility and getting rid of Virtual Queue.
We know our guests love choice and flexibility when planning their time in a theme park—which is why, starting Sept. 23, we will pause the use of virtual queue for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and guests at Disney’s Hollywood Studios may experience this incredible attraction using a traditional standby queue for the first time since it opened in 2019.Disney Parks Blog
So, we aren’t trying to be a downer here but our frustration is quite clear with some of the changes Disney is bringing to the forefront. Not cool. Disney. Not cool.
Stay tuned for more information (and we promise to be more positive next time) as it becomes available
