Disney has big news for their live-action Cruella following a successful release at the box office and on Disney+.
Cruella grossed over $32.4 million domestically and over $48.5 million worldwide in its opening weekend at the box office.
The film received a positive reception from fans and critics alike and Disney has announced they are in the early stages of developing a sequel.
“We are very pleased with Cruella’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson said. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97 percent Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend, ranking it among the most popular of our live-action reimaginings. We look forward to a long run as audiences continue to enjoy this fantastic film.”

Cruella opened in theaters over the Memorial Day weekend and although the numbers weren’t stunning at the box office but with simultaneously making the film available on Disney Plus, the studio had left money on the table but highlighted their streaming service. This gave fans the chance to take part but if they weren’t comfortable going to a theater, it gave the option of enjoying from the couch.
However, it is a huge missed opportunity at the box office. But, flexibility is key, especially now and Disney capitalized in a way only Disney can. We’ll see what happens with the sequel.
