Deep Dive Into Stars of the Upcoming Oni-Wan Kenobi on Disney+

On Monday, March 39, Disney released details surrounding the upcoming Star Wars series on Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The series was originally announced in December of last year along with a number of other series surrounding the Star Wars franchise coming the Disney+, Disney’s extremely popular streaming service.

Back in December Disney announced that Ewan McGregor would indeed be reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi and he would be joined by Hayden Christiensen who will play Anakin Skywalker.

We now know the additional stars who are joining the cast. Moses Ingram, Joel Edgerton, Bonnie Piesse, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, and Benny Safdie.

No specific details were released but we do know that Edgerton and Piesse previously played Luke Skywalker’s aunt and uncle in the prequel films, making it likely that they too will be reprising their roles.

Since we don’t know a lot about various characters and who they will play let’s look into the stas themselves.

Bonnie Piesse

Bonnie Piesse for example is most recently known for escaping the infamous NXIVM cult. The Australian Actress appeared in the 2020 HBO Deocumentary on the cult called The Vow. Piesse was deep inside the cult but did become suspicious. She got out but her husband Vicente remained an active member. As a result, she was blacklisted. The couple’s marriage suffered as a result. But once Vicente decided to leave NXIVM as well, the two got back together and teamed up with Sarah Edmondson and Catherine Oxenberg to get others out of the cult. The cult is famour for targeting wealthy women, stripping them of their bank accounts and their freedoms.

Prior to that she was most well known for her roles in Star Wars. She appeared in the second two prequels, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, as a young version of Beru Lars, Luke Skywalker’s aunt and surrogate mother.

Ewan McGregor

Ewan McGregor, who will star as the show’s namesake has been acting since 1993 when he secured the leading role in a British TV called Lipstick on Your Collar. From 1995 to 2005 he played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars Prequels. He’s no stranger to Disney, starring in the Beauty and the Beast Live Action film and Christopher Robin.

In 2018, he won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film for his performance on the series Fargo.

Outside of acting, McGregor is involved in a lot of charity work and has served as an ambassador for UNICEF UK since 2004. In 2013 he was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to drama and charity. In 2016 he received the BAFTA Britannia Humanitarian Award. He got his American citizenship in 2016.

Joel Egerton

Joel Egerton is another Australian Actor slated to star in this series. His Star Wars Credits include Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002), Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005). Edgerton has been a distinguished ambassador for The Fred Hollows Foundation for a number of years and has strong personal ties to the organisation, which works to restore people’s sight in poor countries and to improve the health of Aboriginal Australians. In 2012, he visited Nepal, where he saw sight restored first hand. He has described social activism and his involvement with The Fred Hollows Foundation as “an escape” from the “materialistic life” that often surrounds an actor.

Indira Varma

Indira Varma is a name you might recognize from Game of Thrones where she played Ellaria Sand. Varma is a British actress with an extensive television credit list. In addition she also has lent her voice to several video games including World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth. She is currently filming Mission Impossible 7.

Rupert Friend

Yet another British Actor, we love how Disney is going across the globe to find these amazing stars, Rupert Friend is a director, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known for his role as CIA operative Peter Quinn in the Showtime political thriller series Homeland, for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination.

In his 39 years he has played a number of influential and larger than life characters. In fact, he made his acting debut alongside Johnny Depp in The Libertine. He starred in The Death of Stalin, portraying Vasily Stalin, son of Joseph Stalin. In Julian Schnabel’s film, At Eternity’s Gate, Friend played Theo Van Gogh, Vincent Van Gogh’s brother.
