The season finale of The Mandalorian did not disappoint and we have a huge easter egg for the future of the series and Boba Fett.
If you are here you have either seen the season finale or are as intriqued as we are.
The season finale of The Mandalorian was wild.
SPOILER TO THE SEASON FINALE AHEAD!
We could stop there but of course we won’t.
The season ended (stop reading if you don’t want to be spoiled) with Grogu (The Child) headed off with Luke Skywalker himself. The final moments of the episode and the season had Mando handing off Grogu to a jedi teacher. Who? None other than Luke Skywalker. Yep. Mark Hamill has made an appearance in the breakout hit as his younger self of course.
“He is strong with the Force. But talent without training is nothing,” Luke explains.
“I will give my life to protect the Child. But he will not be safe until he masters his abilities.”
We could speculate that this is the series foreshadowing the demise of the tiny protege because as we know from the sequel films, Luke’s students don’t have the best track record for survival. We are interested to see how this is spun because there is no mention of the tiny power in any of the sequel films, he is a brand new character, at least to our knowledge. But, we can’t bear that thought so instead we’re focusing on the other major nugget.
You had to stick around for the post-credits scene in order to get this one but we find Boba Fett and Fennec Shand in Jabba the Hutt’s palace. Boba Fett takes his place on Jabba’s throne.
Yep. Then we see:
“The Book of Boba Fett, Coming December 2021.”
Our thought is a spinoff series. It could be the name of the third season of The Mandalorian though. There was no announcement of a Boba Fett spinoff coming to Disney+ during the Investor call but Disney always likes to keep a few priceless gems up their sleeve to throw us off so we think it’s a spinoff.
Let’s deep dive for a minute The “Mandalorian” doesn’t necessaily refer solely to Mando. It could refer to any of the armored Mandalorians, so even Boba Fett (the unaltered clone of Jango Fett, a true Mandalorian) or Bo-Katan.
Our mind still goes to spinoff though. Well, my mind. We are a house divided on that front. I am writing this before my husband, has seen it so it will be interesting to see if he agrees or thinks, as I suspect he will, that it is actually the title of the third season.
Stay tuned for that.
It would be a smart and calculated move for Disney and Lucasfilm to create an additional spinoff. A series is less of a financial and collateral risk than a movie. Our only concern is, Disney announced a lot, and we mean a lot of upcoming Star Wars projects on Disney+.
If this is not a spinoff and instead insight into the third season that would also be a calculated move as it keeps the series fresh.
Bob Iger, prior to his departure as CEO had a strong concern about Star Wars fatique and we get striking while the iron is hot especially with the popularity of The Mandalorian but they are running the risk of overkill. So, while I am inclined to think spinoff, Bryson is probably more accurate in his assumption that we got a sneak into the third season’s focus.
We will have to wait and see.
