So, you’re planning a trip to Disney but you don’t want to completely toss your healthy eating habits out the window? We hear you and have some great tips to keep you on track with your health and fitness goals on your next Disney vacation.
Know Your Limits
It’s easy to go a little overboard on a vacation. Especially on a Disney vacation where food is abundant and Disney is constantly rolling out a stream of delicious new drinks, desserts and snacks. But, you don’t have to try everything. Select a couple new items and stick to those so that you can also partake in some of your old favorites.
In addition to packing on the calories, trying all of the new items can really put a dent in your pocketbook. Do a little research prior to your trip to see what is new and what you really want to try and spread the items that you really want to try out for the duration of your trip. There is a limit to the number of cupcakes, cookies, spring rolls, Dole Whip’s and sugary slush drinks you can consume; don’t overload yourself.
Make Small Substitutions
There are a number of ways you can make small substitutions to help maintain balance on your trip. Many dining locations offer side choices of fruits, vegetables, salads or lighter options.
You don’t have to sacrifice all the snacks or splurges on your vacation but if you make small substitutions like broccoli instead of fries or a green salad instead of potato salad, you might finish the day feeling better than if you imbibe in all of the fat and calorie laden chouces.
Limit the Sugary Beverages
From the Night Blossom to the Dole Whip Float, there is a sugary beverage to be had on every corner of every park and resort on Disney property. Those sugary selections pack a whollop in the calorie department and can really throw you off track. Those are empty calories, frappuccinos, slushes and frozen drinks are all empty calories. They won’t fill you up and will leave you craving more sugar later in the day or in your trip.
We are not saying to skip those all together but maybe limit it to one or two a trip or share one with someone else in your party. In addition to the calories and sugar, Florida is hot and humid for most of the year and those beverages will dehydrate you very quickly which can really put a damper on your day if you get too dehydrated in that Florida sun.
You Don’t Have to Clean Your Plate
Hopefully we all learned a while ago that you don’t really have to clean your plate at meals. In fact, with the obscene portion sizes in our country, cleaning your plate would likely result in consuming double or even triple your daily calories. Eat what you want and move on or better yet, share a few dishes with your crew so that you can try more items.
Sharing is Caring
We’ve stated it a few times in this post but sharing is the best way to go in our not so humble opinion. Not only could you save some calories but it is a great plan for trying even more dishes. Order a few items to share between your group and then everyone can have a taste of the different dishes Disney has to offer.
Sharing also gives you the chance to try out more of those Disney treats that are constantly debuting throughout the parks and resorts.
Give Yourself a Break
You’re on vacation. You can give yourself a little break and enjoy where you are and what you are doing. Disney is a lot of walking so you aren’t sedentary eating around the parks. While I am not a fan of the old saying, “eat like you’re on vacation,” I do believe in moderation and enjoying yourself. If you want that cookie, get the cookie and don’t beat yourself up about it.
Water is the key to success in Disney. Not only is it a lot of walking but it’s also hot and humid. Carry a water bottle in your backpack, order water everywhere you eat. Not only will that help you stay hydrated but it also helps you to get full and stay full longer. Don’t cheat yourself on your water intake; and maybe skip some of those sugary beverages for more water.
Those are some of our tips for maintaining balance on your Disney vacation. Remember that you are on vacation after all. I try to maintain balance when we travel. I get up each morning and workout, whether it is a run or a trip to the gym at the resort or just a quick hotel room workout, I like to get my day started right.
I don’t get all of the treats I see or order all of the fried food or unhealthy selections but I maintain a balance. If you splurge, don’t beat yourself up just maybe try to balance it out with your next meal and if one day gets away from you; that’s ok. Tomorrow is a new day.
Thank you for stopping by and for the love of the mouse, never forget, that it all started with a mouse.
