Hurricane Dorian stalled over Grand Bahama Island for over twenty four hours as a Category 5 hurricane. The storm had winds sustained at over 180 miles per hour and is the second strongest hurricane on record to pass through the Atlantic.

Red Cross spokesman Matthew Cochrane states that more than 13,000 houses, almost half, on Grand Bahama and Abaco, have been severely damaged or destroyed.

According to U.N. officials, more than 60,000 people will need food, and the Red Cross said 62,000 people will need clean drinking water.

Lawson Bates, star of Up!’s Bringing Up Bates and a part of the team for Arkansas-based MedicCorps, flew over Abaco and the team is currently boots on the ground in the Bahamas providing relief. Bates said: “It looks completely flattened. There’s boats way inland that are flipped over. It’s total devastation.”

According to Bahamian officials, the storm has completely desimated the main hospital on Grand Bahama. The Grand Bahama airport was also reported to be under 6 feet of water.

In the wake of the devastation, Disney has “made a commitment of more than $1 million to help relief and recovery efforts in The Bahamas.”

According to Disney Parks Blog, Chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger shared, “The Walt Disney Company stands with the people of The Bahamas affected by Hurricane Dorian.” He went on to say, “We hope our $1 million donation will provide much-needed relief and help our neighbors, colleagues, and all those impacted by this devastating storm begin the long process of recovery as they work to put their lives and communities back together.”

Disney’s pledge to the relief will include a $1 million donation to non-profit relief agencies committed to recovery and rebuilding work in the hardest hit areas. In addition, funds will provide basic necessities to victims.

According to Jeff Vahle, president of Disney Cruise Line, said. “We stand with the Bahamian people, and especially those in Abaco and Grand Bahama, as they recover from the worst storm to ever make landfall in The Bahamas. As the needs in these communities are assessed, we are prepared to aid the relief and recovery efforts through funding, the provision of supplies and by providing support to our Bahamian Crew Members.”
