The Walt Disney Company broke their own record on Sunday for annual global box office earnings by making more money by the year’s mid-way point than any other studio has ever made in an entire year.
The previous record of $7.61 billion was held by Disney in 2016. The new record, set Sunday, July 28 is $7.67 billion and counting.
The $7.67 billion, includes $5.09 billion overall overseas. It’s the first time any Hollywood studio has surpassed the $5 billion threshold internationally.
These numbers have cemented The Walt Disney Company as the alpha Hollywood company.
So far in 2019, three films have amassed more than $1 billion globally for The Walt Disney Company. The most notable being Avengers: Endgame which limped over Avatar for the highest grossing film of all time due to Disney’s re-release of the film.
Captain Marvel and Aladdin are the other two films so far in 2019 that have passed $1 billion for Disney.
Disney isn’t done yet though. Lion King, the live action re-make, complete with a star studded cast including Donald Glover, Beyonce, Seth Rogan and more is on par to surpass the $1 billion mark by it’s conclusion at the box office. It has already surpassed $900 million worldwide.
Toy Story 4 has also surpassed the $900 million mark and expected to hit $1 billion.
Frozen 2 is hitting theaters on November 22 and is one of the most highly anticipated sequels and films of the year and is expected to easily surpass $1 billion.
Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker will be released on December 15, 2019 and is expected to also surpass $1 billion as it is the conclusion of the Skywalker series for Star Wars and is hitting the box office in the midst of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opening in both Disneyland and Disney World.
Disney is smashing box office records left and right and has been secured as the top dog in Hollywood.
