“Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!” – Donald Duck
In honor of the Number 1 Duck we are going to do highlight some of the best facts about Mr. Donald Duck and the impact that he has had on Disney, people and film. No time to waste, let’s jump right in.
Donald Duck appeared for the first time on the big screen on June 9, 1934, co-starring in the Disney Silly Symphonies’ short The Wise Little Hen. He has gone on to star in seven feature films to this point, which is more than any of his Disney counterparts.
He is the only known major Disney character, who has a known middle name. Donald Fauntleroy Duck. His middle name was revealed in the 1942 film entitled, Donald Gets Drafted.
June 9 is Donald Duck Day! celebrating his debut onscreen but Donald didn’t get his first starring role until the 1937 short, Don Donald. The eight-minute cartoon follows Donald’s adventures in Mexico, centering on his attempts to win over his lady love, Donna Duck.
He is six years younger than Mickey Mouse and his birthday is June 9, 1934, making him 84 years old! Looking good buddy.
Donald is a White Pekin duck, also known as a Long Island Duck. This species of duck was first bred in China and brought from China to the U.S., specifically New York, in 1873.
In 1995, Donald had an asteroid was named after him. Asteroid 12410 is located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
Donald is the only popular film and television cartoon character to be a mascot for a major U.S. university. Donald takes on the turf as the Fighting Duck for the University of Oregon.
The way in which Donald Duck talks, formally called buccal speech, and it is an alaryngeal form of vocalization which uses the inner cheek to produce sound rather than the larynx.
Donald Duck won an oscar for the 1943 animated short Der Feuhrer’s Face, which was originally titled Donald Duck in NutziLand and was an anti-Nazi cartoon.
Walt Disney referred to Donald as the “problem child”.
He said of everyone’s favorite Duck, “One of the greatest satisfactions in our work here at the studio is the warm relationship that exists within our cartoon family. Mickey, Pluto, Goofy, and the whole gang have always been a lot of fun to work with. But like many large families, we have a problem child. You’re right, it’s Donald Duck.”
Donald Duck’s father’s name is Quackmore Duck, his mother’s name is Hortense McDuck and his twin sister is called Della Thelma Duck. And Who could forget Uncle Scrooge and those trouble making nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie. Check out Donald’s family tree in the photo!
