Construction has begun on the Star Wars Hotel exclusively coming to Walt Disney World. Although little is known about the timeline for this project, rumor has it that the goal is to open in time for 50th anniversary celebrations at Walt Disney World so we are anticipating mid to late 2021.
What does this mean for Star Wars at the parks? Eventually, there will be a larger star wars offering at Walt Disney World than at Disneyland which will still host a near replica of Galaxy’s Edge but will not be offering the hotel experience as of yet.
Here is what we know in terms of construction for this one of a kind immersive hotel experience. Space has been cleared behind the construction for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, adjacent to Hollywood Studios.
Recent photos show that foundation work has begun on the hotel and a series of recent aerial shots show that the site has started to go vertical and it appears that the first story of the hotel is currently being constructed.
According to permits filed back in November we can see the outline of the building that is currently under construction, a more detailed look of the building that is going to house the rooms. Additional work for the foundation of what will eventually become the Dojo, the table service restaurant and more will be housed.
The hotel is not expected to be very tall, we believe about three or so stories high, so as not to detract from the immersive experience.
We know that this hotel will have two check in processes, one on the ground level that will be more of a traditional check-in and then a second check-in process after you take a themed elevator up to the star ship for a second immersive check-in to the star ship.
Although the hotel is much smaller than most Disney resorts, because of the total immersion the experience will provide, this resort is taking a lot more imagineering and time than other Disney resorts. This resort will provide a one of a kind hotel experience, much like an attraction as it will be an entire immersion experience.
The hotel is described by Disney as being an immersive story for guests who will board a Starship and be able to interact with characters of the Star Wars Universe as well as becoming a part of the story themselves.
Everything included in the hotel from rooms and entertainment to the imagineered windows showing an outdoor environment created by Disney. Although not yet confirmed, it is rumored that guests will embark on their Star Wars adventure for a two or three day excursion at the same time as the other guests. This will allow for Disney to begin anew with each set of guests at the same time and create a seamless storyline for each guest and group. If this is the case, Disney will be able to offer the experience two to three times a week for a whole new group of guests staying at the resort.
A variety of experiences will be offered within the immersive experience that allows guests to shape their stay with immersive dining, training sessions, multiple experiences to take part in and become part of the Star Wars story while staying at the hotel. The hotel gives guests the chance to design their own storyline within the Star Wars story.
So, how will the hotel connect to Galaxy’s Edge? A transport hall within the hotel will take guests still fully immersed in the story to a landing location located most likely within Black Spire Outpost.
There has been no official announcement as yet but we are hearing that the name for the resort that has been pitched is “Galactic Journeys: A Star Wars Adventure”. The supposed name for the hotel in and of itself is interesting and lends itself to an entirely new and uncharted experience as nothing about the name says “hotel or resort” instead it is indeed lending itself more to an attraction than a sleep destination.
When it comes to entering the hotel to begin your experience, the process will be more along the lines of a boarding process than a check-in and sources say that the vessel has a connection to Kylo Ren and will be part of the “Chandrila Star Line”.
The connection? Ben Solo was born on Chandrila, long before he became Kylo Ren and took up with the Dark Side. If true, this adds a level of detail unheard of to a hotel experience as it will truly transport guests to the middle of Star Wars history and lore.
For those a little less inclined in Star Wars knowledge here is a bit of history on the planet Chandrila:
- Chandrila was a planet in the Core Worlds of the galaxy. The female human Mon Mothma hailed from Chandrila, and represented her homeworld in the Senate of the Galactic Republic. Chandrila was one of the planets targeted for destruction by Emperor Sheev Palpatine’s second Death Star, who planned to use the station’s planet-shattering superweapon to end the Rebellion through sheer terror. Following the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY, Chandrila became the capital of the New Republic and the seat of the newly formed Galactic Senate as a tribute to the Republic of old. It was not permanent, however, as the Republic chose to rotate its capital world based on elections. (Source, Starwars.fandom.com)

Very little has been confirmed by Disney as of yet and for now we are sharing rumors with you for this brand new type of hotel experience being offered to guests but we expect confirmation to come at D23 in Anaheim this August.
Stay tuned for more Star Wars and Disney information as it becomes available. For details on what Disneyland is doing to prepare for the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge see our detailed post HERE.
