EPCOT was one of Walt Disney’s most adventurous and lofty ideas. EPCOT, meaning Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, was originally envisioned by Walt to become a completely self-contained and self-sufficient city. Essentially a city in a bubble, completely and utterly sustainable upon itself from everything from food, community, entertainment and even weather control. The ideal city.
Although EPCOT is quite different from Walt’s vision, it represents an incredible opportunity for Disney to create a park based on sustainability, the future, education and the cultures of the world.
Although nothing has been confirmed by Disney yet, we expect much to be revealed at the D23 expo in Anaheim this August. But, if the rumors are to be believed. EPCOT is about to undergo a major transformation. But, what exactly is being done?
Fountain of Nations
The Fountain of Nations is iconic at EPCOT and rumor has it this entire area will be re-purposed and re-imagined making way for a new garden area. Future World icon will be completely removed for a new Epcot garden that includes a beer garden.
In addition, the Innoventions West plaza, Pin Trader, Club Cool and Starbucks are also set to be completely removed and demolished. I’m just speaking for myself here but I would much rather see Electric Umbrella go by the wayside so Starbucks and Club Cool to stick around.
New Festival Center
Although details on the location for a new festival center have not yet been made available. With EPCOT becoming a near year-round festival hot spot, this is an obvious need. In addition, with the soon to be Play Center taking over the Wonders of Life building, what is currently being used as the Festival Center needs a permanent place of residence.
Journey of Water
This is new! We hadn’t previously heard rumors of this so it is incredibly intriguing. According to preliminary sketches and information this new water element appears to be some sort of path with a variety of water features incorporated including special features for children. The path will bring guests over to The Seas with Nemo and Friends.
The current Starbucks is soon to be shut down and demolished, but most of us can’t survive off Joffrey’s (our apologies for those who love it). Happily, a new Starbucks will be built on the west side of Future World. As long as we have a Starbucks you know the For Love of the Mouse duo is happy.
Guardians of the Galaxy
“We call it a ‘storytelling coaster,” Says Disney’s Bob Chapek told the crowd in attendance for Disney’s presentation at the annual industry gathering. “On most coasters, the vehicles point straight ahead throughout the ride, but on this attraction each individual cab will be programmed to direct your eye to the story happening around you.” This state of the art family coaster will be the largest enclosed coasters in the world and will be located where Ellen’s Energy Adventure previously was located. This ride is set to open in 2021.
Rumor has it, although not yet confirmed by Disney that the Ratatouille ride, one of the most overlooked and under-rated projects currently under construction at EPCOT, Ratatouille is rumored to be opening on October 1st, 2021. Straight out of the adorable film where everyone can cook, this ride will be located in the France pavilion of World Showcase.
The newest mode of Transportation at Disney is the Disney Skyliner system. Transporting guests to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios from Disney’s Pop Century, Disney’s Art of Animation, Disney’s Caribbean Beach and Disney’s Riviera Resort. The system is currently being tested and is slated to open fall 2019.
“Good evening. On behalf of Walt Disney World — the place where dreams come true — we welcome all of you to Epcot, and World Showcase. We’re gathered here tonight, around the fire — as people of all lands have gathered for thousands and thousands of years before us — to share the light, and to share a story.” IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth, the longest running show at Walt Disney World is set to end on September 30, 2019. That’s right, on April 9, during a livestream from Disney Parks Blog, it was announced that this iconic nighttime spectacular will come to an end on September 30 and a temporary show called EPCOT Forever, will be implemented immediately after. The new (temporary) show will include drones, kites, fireworks, amazing throwback music highlighting the history of EPCOT and more.
