Le Fou’s Brew vs Butterbeer

Hi there Disney friends! Thank you so much for stopping by and for checking out this post. Let’s get started.

First of all, have you heard of Le Fou’s brew and butterbeer? If not, have you been living in a cave? Just kidding. We will start with Le Fou’s brew. This tasty treat can be found at Gaston’s Tavern in Magic Kingdom. It’s good! It tastes like frozen apple juice with a frothy sweet marshmallow topping. It tastes like that, because that is essentially what it is.

In my opinion, it is Magic Kingdom’s answer to butterbeer. You can get it in a souvenir cup which is cute, and either has Belle of Gaston on it, but the only souvenir cup that I think is worth it at any theme park is the butterbeer one and I have more than I need of that so I just get it in a nice plastic cup and guess what! It tastes the exact same and is far less expensive.

Not going to Disney for a while but want to try this out at home? Here is a great recipe for Le Fou’s brew that you can make in your own kitchen!

What you need:

  • 1 12 ounce can frozen apple juice (do not thaw too much)
  • 3 ounces cold water
  • 2 ounce mango juice
  • 2 ounces marshmallow syrup
  • 2 cups of ice
  • 1/2 cup marshmallow fluff
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 3 tablespoons mango juice
  • 5 tablespoons passionfruit juice

In a cold bowl, put whipping cream, 4 tablespoons mango juice and 5 tablespoons passionfruit juice. Whip until soft peaks form add marshmallow fluff, whip until stiff peaks form. Refrigerate until ready to top your drink.

In clean bowl add apple juice, water, mango juice, marshmallow syrup and ice to a blender. Blend until thick and smooth.

Pour in a mug and top with whipped cream.

gastontavernLe Fou’s Brew is good; it’s kind of plain in my opinion, but it is essentially just frozen apple juice. It is still refreshing and I still enjoy it but to me, it isn’t amazing. It isn’t the thing I look forward to most when getting to Magic Kingdom but it is still something I get almost every trip. If you haven’t tried it, you should put it on your list to try at least once.

Now let’s talk about butterbeer! Butterbeer is the most incredible drink concoction ever created. The end.

If you have read my previous post on the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, you know that I love butterbeer. When you taste it, if you have read the books, it tastes exactly how you think it will. They took J.K. Rowling’s vision for a small detail in the Harry Potter series and they made it an unforgettable tasting experience. And even though it says beer, it is non-alcoholic.

Fun fact: the butterbeer at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is allergy friendly! No eggs, no dairy, no gluten and no nuts. Side note, they cannot guarantee the topping due to cross-contamination but the ingredients themselves are allergy friendly.

butterbeersThink cream soda meets a liquid butterscotch pudding. There are two versions that you can get at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. There is a frozen version (get that one) or a cold version. Both are good but the frozen one just somehow has that extra magic sprinkled in.

Butterbeer can be enjoyed all the time, even from your own kitchen! Want to try it out at home? Here is an amazing recipe…but I’m going to tell you now, it isn’t quite the same as enjoying this frozen treat while wandering through the streets of Hogsmeade or staring up at Hogwarts. Fair warning, don’t count the calories…you don’t want to know.

What you need:

For drink

  • 2 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 2 cups cream soda frozen into ice cubes
  • teaspoons imitation butter extract
  • teaspoons rum extract
  • tablespoons butterscotch topping
  • 1 cup cream soda not frozen

For topping

  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2.5 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup marshmallow fluff

Pour one can of cream soda into ice cube trays and freeze until solid. Once frozen, place 6 cubes in blender. Add remaining drink ingredients and blend until smooth. Pour into frosted mug.

Whip cream until soft peaks form, add three tablespoons sugar, pinch salt and marshmallow fluff. Whip until stiff peaks form. Top drink with cream mixture and drizzle with butterscotch topping

Let’s compare. We’re going to look at the frozen versions. The marshmallow toppings are very similar! Le Fou’s brew has a slightly fruitier taste because of the fruit juice and the butterbeer is sweeter. Just all around, it has more sugar, you are going to get a sugar high. My first trip to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, I had four in one day and it was an experience.

The tastes are similar, sweet, rich and refreshing but the butterbeer again is sweeter and has a richer taste. Le Fou’s brew is more of a beverage than a decadent treat so if you don’t have a big sweet tooth, I imagine that you would prefer Le Fou’s brew.

im here

You be the judge! If you have never had the opportunity to try these two drinks, take a stab at these recipes. If you have tried them, let me know in the comments which you prefer.

Thanks for stopping by Disney friends! It’s been fun. If you like this post, give it a like and a comment and let me know which you prefer! We’ll see ya real soon friends and never forget, that it all started with a mouse!
