A Day in the Life of Deluxe Disney Dining at Animal Kingdom

On our last trip to Walt Disney World, it rained. My hair is a wet mess but it’s Disney and that’s fine! We were at Animal Kingdom on this day and we never miss the Lion King show but the pouring rain was a perfect excuse to get to Festival of the Lion King and what a treat it was. I am just so proud. My husband, this charismatic man next to me in this photo, was selected as a key player in the show. I mean this is fifteen minutes of fame folks! I don’t know where we go from here. I don’t know what goal we shoot for after this.

So, this was obviously a huge moment. But! There was a also a lot of food consumed on this day and we don’t want to focus too much on the Animal Kingdom celebrity status of my husband we want to talk about the food! We love the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan (DDP). We are eaters.

We like food. And at home, we don’t get to eat a lot of great food because we are constantly counting macros (if you don’t know what that means, it’s fine! It means you still eat food because it tastes good and you are winning). So, when we go on vacation, we completely cancel out months of eating tasteless, weird food and we eat! So, who better to tell you how to enjoy the dining plan than us! That is not to discount the other amazing blogs  we follow and love! They eat too and we salute them!

Let’s break the Deluxe Disney Dining Plan down.
3 meal credits
2 snack credits
Per person, per day.
In addition, you get a refillable mug that you can refill at any quick service restaurant!

When you look at this, it doesn’t sound like a lot. It sounds like enough food but not an overwhelming amount of food. Let me tell you, it is an overwhelming amount of food. If you do the Disney dining plan right, and it’s not hard and doesn’t have to involve getting the most expensive thing on the menu at all times, you can get to try some amazing food and a lot of food and you will have some great experiences!

Let’s get started! First for breakfast, you want to hit Tusker House! It’s a character meal and is only one dining credit and the food is great! They have a very nice spread including scrambled eggs, mickey waffles, croissants, bacon, sausage, breakfast potatoes, fruits, a few African inspired dishes and more and you get to meet Mickey, Minnie, Daisy and Goofy all in safari gear which is a real treat! Buffets are a great use of a dining plan credit, especially character buffets. This is my favorite character breakfast in Disney.

For a snack, you need to try one of the most anticipated and highly recommended new items in all of Animal Kingdom and for that head over to Pandora and Pongu Pongu and pick up a drink called the Night Blossom. To be fair, I haven’t yet tried this, but I will already tell you I will love it. Every blog I’ve read, every vlog I’ve watched, every pod cast I’ve listened to has said, it is delicious and well worth a snack credit.

For lunch, go ahead and stay in Pandora and head to Satuli Canteen. The menu here is amazing. Take a look HERE . Stay tuned post, December trip, for a full review of this restaurant and my final decisions on recommendations. This is a great use of a dining credit and the menu has some great options and looks healthy, filling and tasty! You are also going to utilize a snack credit here and get the Navi Cheesecake. This is a blueberry cream cheese mousse and topped with a passion fruit curd! It is gorgeous and looks delicious and I can’t wait to blog about shoving this delightful concoction in my mouth in December.

Finally, for dinner you are going to take your final dining credit over to Yak and Yeti and you are going to eat some really yummy food. Important tip for the DDP is that if you eat at a table service restaurant you get an appetizer, an entree and a dessert. Each person. That’s a lot of food. So, these are my tops for each of those. For an appetizer, either the Firecracker shrimp or the Ahi Tuna Nachos. Entree options I would go for either the Kalbi steak and coconut shrimp or the Malaysian Seafood Curry. For dessert, mango pie.

There are those that swear by the math of the DDP. That no matter what, you should always get the most expensive item. Why? Why get something you don’t really want just because it is the most expensive thing on the menu. Does that make it taste better? No. Now, I’m not saying don’t go for that expensive item if that is your heart’s desire but don’t just do it because of the price tag. You paid a lot of money for this DDP, get what you want to eat. Don’t look at the cost, look at the item, read the description and order what sounds good to you.

So that’s it! You have now, eaten a lot of food, gained a couple pounds, refilled your mug a few times throughout the day, seen the yeti on Mount Everest, taken a gander at the wild savanna on Kilimanjaro Safaris and hopefully taken a ride on Flight of Passage. I hope you’ve enjoyed this adventure! If you have other suggestions, I’d love to hear them in the comments. Let me know what your favorites are and how you would use your DDP credits! Thanks for stopping by and for the love of the mouse, never forget that it all started with a mouse.
